ISLAMIC RELIEF
Kids Create Cards for Kashmiri Orphans

02/02/08

Islamic Relief Scotland recently instigated an Eid Card designing competition for schoolchildren in Scotland. The idea was not only to encourage common understanding of different faiths, but also to encourage children to think about those in the world who do not have any parents – the orphans.

The competition was an unqualified success with many quality entries being received. Winners have now been chosen, and their story was reported in a Scottish local newspaper. Below is the story. To read the story direct at the newspapers website, please click here

KIDS CREATE CARDS FOR KASHMIR

Children from Aberdeen are sending greetings messages to orphans in Kashmir.

Schoolchildren across the city designed cards for the Kashmiri youngsters to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

Organised by Islamic Relief Scotland, the pilot project aimed to educate city pupils on the religion.

Four primary schools entered the competition for pupils in primary five and upwards.

Winners were Freya Fraser from Danestone School, Mariam Shafi from Middleton Park Primary, Lucy McLeod and Reya Srivastava, both from Mile End School, and Euan Milne and Scott Adams from Broomhill Primary
.

He invited the schools in Aberdeen to produce cards to allow pupils to show they had not forgotten the plight of youngsters in the area. He also wanted to highlight the similarities between Eid - which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting - and Christmas.

Mr. Malik said: "These festivals of Christianity and Islam have a lot in common, they both involve families celebrating; and while Christians often go to church at Christmas, Moslems go to the mosque for Eid”.

Mr. Malik will visit some of the 2,000 orphans now on Islamic Relief's database. He said: "The cards the children have designed in Aberdeen are really inspiring, wishing the orphans all the best for Eid, and reminding them that they are in our thoughts."
