What is Islamic Relief?

 

 

Islamic Relief is an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) aiming to alleviate the suffering of some of the world’s poorest people. Grounded in Islamic humanitarian principles, the below quotes demonstrate why as Muslims, we work to put our faith into action.

Worldwide organisation

Founded in 1984 by Dr Hany El-Banna, Islamic Relief has

rapidly grown to operate field offices in 13 countries with projects running in many others.


Where does Islamic Relief work?

Islamic Relief has field offices across the world; in Afghanistan, Albania, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Chechnya, China, Egypt, Kosovo, Indonesia, Mali, Pakistan, Palestine and Sudan. It also carries out projects in Ethiopia, Jordan, Kenya, India, Iraq, Somalia and Yemen. Due to its wide presence on the ground, Islamic Relief is able to quickly and effectively respond to major emergencies as and when they arise.


Islamic Relief UK

Islamic Relief UK is a grassroots organisation, working directly with local communities to raise funds. Its regional fundraising offices are in London, Birmingham, Leicester, Bradford and Glasgow.



Promoting Sustainable Development

Islamic Relief believes strongly in promoting sustainable development.  Working with local communities, people are provided with the equipment, skills and knowledge necessary to rebuild their own lives.


Empowering local people to take responsibility for their own lives, Islamic Relief works to return to them a sense of dignity and pride.


What does Islamic Relief do?


Emergency Relief


In the emergency stage; Islamic Relief works to provide food, water, shelter and healthcare, for example, in response to earthquakes, floods, drought and of course, war.

Rehabilitation

In this stage, Islamic Relief helps to rebuild people’s lives. Examples of work include the rebuilding of houses, schools, hospitals, clinics and roads.

Development Work

This stage is about helping people to help themselves. There are five areas in which Islamic Relief carries out development work:


Sustainable Livelihoods

Islamic Relief encourages private enterprise in helping people to provide for themselves and for their families. Skills and equipment are provided through interest free loans if necessary, to help people build their own futures.

Islamic Relief also shares the risk of the business in accordance with Islamic economic principles.
